Students are expected to read nightly for a minimum of 20 minutes. Homework reading needs to be time reading a book at the appropriate independent reading level. Too low and their reading will not progress as quickly, too high and their comprehension will be poor. (Scholastic book wizard has a fantastic site for checking the reading level of a book. www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/
Students are given a new green homework log weekly that needs to be completed. One side is for homework reading, the other side is for in class reading. I would like parents to please sign the log at the end of the week before students turn them in to verify that you have seen them reading.
I collect the logs on Monday mornings so that any students who choose to read over the weekend can add the reading to their log.
At the end of each month students will be given back their logs and asked to calculate the number of pages and minutes they've read for that month. This will become a running record so they can self-evaluate and set monthly reading goals.
You can expect Math Homework Monday-Thursday nights. Friday's Math Homework will be done in class. Math Homework consists of a Homework Problem Set each night. The Homework mirrors the Problem set done in the classroom that day.
-Student must work the homework problems to the at least the level they reached on their problem set in class.
If your child says they don't know how to do a problem, PLEASE DO NOT TEACH THEM ANOTHER WAY. Ask them instead "If you had to guess, what would you do to solve the problem? Is there another way you could figure out the problem than the way you learned today?" We want to encourage problem solving. They can also watch the lesson online. It is available through the link on my resources page.
PLEASE have them STOP if they are reaching frustration. Write Lesson on the top of the page and I will see it the next day.
**If you child forgets their homework at school. You can print a copy from the link on my resources page.
You can expect Spelling Weekly. The Spelling Program I use is called Words Their Way. On Monday words are handed out. Each student will keep their word cards in a pocket in their Spelling Journals.
Day 1 Homework: -Timed Sort
Place your spelling pattern card on the table. Time how quickly you can properly sort your spelling words into columns. Record Time in your Spelling Journal and get a parent's signature.
Day 2 Homework: - Writing
Write a short story using each word. (or) Write sentences using each word.
Underline the Spelling Words.
Day 3 Homework:- Word Hunt or Wordle (see below for link button)
Find words in magazines or books that have similar word patterns OR Create a word cloud using Wordle with all of your spelling words. The more times you type a word, the larger it becomes. Make your most challenging words the LARGEST!
Day 3 Study: Take a Spelling Practice Test
Make columns on your paper and title each column with the sort pattern. Have a parent or friend give you the spelling words for the week. Write the words in the proper column. Review any words you missed.
Day 5: Spelling Test (Fridays)
On Short Weeks Day 3 Homework will be skipped.
